What is whiplash?

Injuries to the neck caused by a sudden movement of the head, backward, forward, or sideways, are referred to as "whiplash." Whether from a car accident, sports, or an accident at work, whiplash or other neck injuries demand a chiropractic check-up. The biggest danger with whiplash injuries is that the symptoms can take years to develop.

Whiplash is most commonly associated with rear-end car collisions in which the heads of those in the front car are suddenly snapped back and forth by the impact. Whiplash injuries most often result in sprain-strain of the neck. The ligaments that help support, protect, and restrict excessive movement of the neck are torn, which is called a sprain. The joints in the back of the spine are covered by ligaments, which seem to be particularly vulnerable to whiplash injury. In addition, the muscles and tendons are strained—stretched beyond their normal limits. The discs between the vertebrae (spinal column) can be torn, potentially causing a disc herniation. The nerve roots between the vertebrae (spinal column) may also be stretched and become inflamed. Even vertebrae can be fractured or dislocated in a whiplash injury.

The resulting instability of the spine and soft tissues can result in headaches, dizziness, blurred vision, pain in the shoulder, arms and hands, reduced ability to turn and bend, and even low back problems. As the body attempts to adapt, symptoms may not appear for weeks or even months later. A common result of these injuries is the loss of the normal cervical curve (on x-ray imaging), causing positive orthopedic and neurological examination findings.

Chiropractic Care Can Help:

The accident that caused the whiplash can fade into memory, but the physical and psychological damage of whiplash can become chronic, affecting a victim's quality of life. Chiropractic care is necessary to relieving the pain and other devastating effects of whiplash because it can:

  1. Restore movement & Function lost after the accident.
  2. Overcome muscle weakness and improve muscle tone.
  3. Reduce symptoms that can continue or return over many years.
  4. Speed recovery.
